How we build

We build fromunderstanding.

Our approach is simple to describe and demanding to practise: start with a real problem, solve it with focus, and keep improving through use. It is the method we apply across every business and product in the Sameday portfolio.

The thinking behind it

Design shows us the problem. Technology helps us solve it.

Our approach grew out of design work. Understanding a business well enough to design for it reveals where it struggles, and those struggles are often worth building something for.

Start close to the problem

We prefer problems we have seen first-hand over ideas that only look good on paper.

Stay focused

Each business and product does one thing well rather than many things adequately.

Keep improving

Launch is a beginning. Real use tells us what to refine, add or remove next.

Five stages

From observation to foundation.

Each stage asks different questions and produces something the next stage depends on. Select a stage to explore it.

Observe a practical problem.

We start with friction we can see: a task that takes too long, a process that looks less professional than the business behind it, or a gap between what businesses need and what is available to them.

Questions we ask

  • Who experiences this problem, and how often?
  • How do they deal with it today?
  • Why has it not already been solved well?

What it produces

A clearly stated problem that is worth solving.

In the portfolio: each business names its problem plainly. ColorInvoice, for example, starts from the fact that an invoice should look as professional as the business sending it.

Define a focused solution.

We decide what the solution will do and, just as importantly, what it will not. A narrow scope makes a product easier to understand, easier to build well and easier to trust.

Questions we ask

  • What is the smallest solution that is genuinely useful?
  • What should it deliberately leave out?
  • Is this best delivered as a service, a software product or a venture still being explored?

What it produces

A focused proposition and the operating model that suits it.

In the portfolio: SentryDog stays grounded in website care, covering maintenance, backups, updates, monitoring and technical support, rather than trying to be everything at once.

Design for clarity and usability.

Design is where a solution becomes understandable. We shape interfaces, language and identity so that people can see quickly what something does and how to use it.

Questions we ask

  • Can a new customer understand it within a minute?
  • Does every screen and sentence earn its place?
  • Does the brand suit the people it serves?

What it produces

A usable experience and a distinct brand identity.

In the portfolio: every business keeps its own visual identity, designed for its own audience, rather than a single house style applied to all.

Build and refine through real use.

We put working versions in front of real customers as early as is responsible, then improve based on what people actually do rather than what we assumed they would do.

Questions we ask

  • Where do people hesitate or get stuck?
  • What do they ask for again and again?
  • What can we remove to make it simpler?

What it produces

Steady improvements, guided by evidence from use.

In the portfolio: AI visual editing in htmlhost and AI-assisted invoice creation in ColorInvoice exist to remove friction from tasks customers do every day.

Develop the foundations for sustainable growth.

Once something works, we strengthen what sits beneath it: dependable operations, clear support, sound processes and a brand people recognise and trust.

Questions we ask

  • What will strain first as more people use it?
  • What does a customer need from us after they sign up?
  • Is it genuinely ready to grow?

What it produces

A business that can grow on solid ground.

In the portfolio: we label developing ventures such as Shenzhen Yuyu Technologies clearly, and describe their scope only once the foundations are confirmed.

Operating models

One approach, applied three ways.

The five stages apply to everything we build, but where the effort concentrates depends on how a business operates.

Service businesses

Expertise, delivered directly.

People-led businesses where value comes from judgement, craft and coordination. Refinement happens through client work, one engagement informing the next.

Tools people use themselves.

Focused products with a defined scope that customers use directly. Improvement happens release by release, guided by how people actually use them.

Ideas taking shape.
